What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a technique used on soft tissues in the body to effectively alleviate stress, reduce muscle tension and restore balance to the musculoskeletal system.

Sports massage is not just for sports people. Muscular tension can build up in the body as a result of poor posture, lifestyle habits, repetitive tasks and emotional stress. Massage can therefore be just as beneficial for someone who works at a desk all day as it can be for a professional athlete.

Frequent sports massage is often recommended for those who train regularly as it irons out any niggles which may develop into injuries, as well as speeding up the healing of existing injuries. It is therefore a preventative treatment and means the individual can train more often with less chance of injury. It can also be used prior to an event to prepare the athlete for their best performance, as well as after an event when it will remove waste products and prevent muscle soreness.

I strongly believe that sports massage can bring results where other therapies have not. I am regularly able to release chronic back pain and speed up the healing of injuries. My clients range from runners, cyclists and ironman triathletes to office workers, pregnant women and busy mums.

I am a graduate of the prestigious London School of Sports Massage (LSSM). I use a combination of deep tissue techniques and am constantly updating my skills.

As a qualified Yoga teacher I encourage clients to change postural habits that may be creating stress to their bodies and give advice on simple stretching techniques to target tight areas.

Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports massage has many benefits, both physiological and psychological.

  • Injury prevention: reduces the potential for overuse injuries. It irons out any trauma to muscle fibres which occur on a microscopic level and often go unnoticed until an injury occurs.
  • Faster recovery from training and events: stimulates blood circulation and improves lymphatic flow. It flushes out the build up of toxins and restores nutrition to muscle fibres. It is also clinically proven to reduce Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).
  • Faster recovery from injuries: softens tight muscles around the site of injury. It increases blood flow to the area and gradually restores flexibility and range of movement.
  • Enhanced training and competitive performance: faster recovery and fewer injuries means enhanced quality and quantity of training.
  • Reduced muscle tension and pain: tight muscles reduce the effectiveness of training and increase the risk of injury. Sports massage can also unlock backs held in chronic muscular tension and bring fast relief to built up stress in any area of the body.
  • Improved muscle flexibility and range of movement.
  • Breakdown of scar tissue and adhesions (knots) to alleviate tension and minimise sites for potential injury.
  • Strengthened immune system: improves the circulation of lymph which carries immune cells thus helping the body to fight off infection and speeding recovery from injuries and illness.
  • Reduced stress: stress hinders performance. Massage alleviates stress and anxiety and reduces depression. It promotes relaxation and gives the client an overall feeling of well being.
  • Improved posture and general body awareness: improves the alignment of the body reducing the risk of biomechanical imbalance.

What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is a treatment used on clients whose bodies are in a state of stress as a result of trauma such as injury, accident, poor posture or chronic tension. It looks at the body as a whole and uses a variety of techniques to remove blockages, reduce pain and restore the body to a more balanced state.

It is also important to look at lifestyle habits and poor training routines in order to address the root of the problem.
